Hypoplastic Left Heart Syndrome (HLHS) is a congenital heart defect that is uniformly fatal when untreated. It is the leading cause of death among the nearly one in every 100 babies born with congenital heart disease.

My research team is making tremendous strides in HLHS research by studying the ETS1 gene (the Jacobsen syndrome “heart gene”) in order to gain new insights into how this gene causes congenital heart defects. I am particularly excited about the new genetic pathways we are discovering that are regulated by ETS1. We have even identified two “downstream” genes that are regulated by ETS1 and likely have a critical role in causing HLHS. In the last year and a half, we were thrilled to have four papers published featuring our research in congenital heart disease, including in the prestigious journals Circulation Research and Human Molecular Genetics.
