My name is Zaim Attisha and I was a patient at Rady Children’s Hospital.
As a kid I had always fantasized about what life would look like in the future, and never once did I expect to find myself lying in a hospital bed. Like most kids who were in the hospital at the time, I was afraid and confused about why I was there to begin with. The year was 2010 and it was spring. I was diagnosed with a virus called Transverse myelitis, a virus that impacts the nervous system. I remember that feeling of hopelessness after hearing my diagnoses. However, I remember it was just then when I heard my doctor John Crawford say the most reassuring words, words that would change my life for years to come- “We can get through this.”
The Dr. Crawford was right, after a year of difficult and slow physical and occupation therapy sessions done at the hospital and home, I was able to overcome all odds and make a full recovery. We did in fact get through this. Without the help of the extraordinary doctors, the love and support of my family, and our faith I do not think I would be standing where I am today.
Rady Children’s Hospital has done and continues to do so much for me. The doctors, nurses, and therapists became part of my family. And I ask for your help in supporting this family. By joining and donating to the to the Rady Children’s Hospital Dream Big Walk, we can make a difference in the lives of so many children. Because every kid deserves a chance to say, “We got through this.”
Thank you for your support.
